We study the biogeography and landscape ecology of plants and animals in the past, present and future. Much of our work emphasizes the impacts of human-caused landscape change on terrestrial ecological communities. Patterns of human land use -- agriculture and urbanization -- and large-scale global change drivers including anthropogenic climate change and the introduction of non-native species, often interact with natural disturbance regimes such as fire and hurricanes, to shape plant and animal community dynamics. How resilient are ecological communities to these multiple impacts? Cultural and biological conservation and sustainable land stewardship questions drive this work.
